Fortunately, Houston is also home to powerful and outstanding non-profit organizations that give those in need support and those looking to improve their community a place to flourish.
Ronald McDonald House
With a large network of local Chapters, the Ronald McDonald House has been keeping families together and keeping them close to the medical care they need. Their mission is to provide families with sick children the comfort and support they need. Based in Houston, this nonprofit expands in more the 64 countries and regions around the world. They offer 366 Ronald McDonald Houses, 242 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, 51 Ronald McDonald Car Mobiles, with country-specific programs. Their 508,788 volunteers, generous donors and connections with medical communities around the world helps keep families together and give their children the medical care they need.
Houston Food Bank
Founded in 1982, Houston Food Bank continues to lead the fight against hunger. They focus their mission on hunger and food waste. Recognized as America’s largest food bank, this non-profit organization “distributes 122 million nutritious meals through it’s network of 1,500 community partners in southeast Texas, feeding 800,00 individuals each year.” On top of providing those in need with nutritious meals, they also offer many programs to assist in applying for state-funded social and health services, on-sit pantries with extended hours, healthy meals and nutrition education for kids, classes on food safety and budgeting, and providing school supplies for teachers in low income schools.
Hope Stone
Hope Stone has held its doors open for over 20 years offering arts outreach programs to a diverse population in Houston. Their mission is to unlock the innate creativity of young people and adults though these programs and improve the quality of life for Houstonians through art. This non-profit is home to The Hope Project, which provides mindful art education in music, dance and theatre to all demographics. It’s also home to Hope Stone dance, which challenge, educate and entertain audiences with powerful and intricate performances. Hope Stone will continue to bring arts into the community and improve Houston’s quality of life.
Turning Point Center
With a mission to help the homeless elderly, ages 50 or above, the Turning Point Center of Houston helps seniors get off the streets and re-enter society as independent, self-sufficient, and productive citizens. As a non-profit organization offers food, shelter, and rehabilitative services to get homeless seniors back on their feet. They understand that these individuals are underprivileged and unable to have safe and adequate living conditions on their own. With help and care from Turning Point Center, these elderly citizens can return to society as self-supporting individuals.
Family to Family Network
This non-profit helps to create success for children and young adults with disabilities by empowering their families. Family to Family Network empowers these families to navigate the complex education, health care and social service systems involved with having a child with a disability. They provide families with referrals to community resources, a Guided Transition program, a Leadership & Advocacy training program, and other services for an opportunity to network and learn from one another. By providing these services, they’re goal is to create communities where all children belong and excel. Family to Family Network gives families of children with disabilities provide them with the support they need.
